I remember lying in bed, thinking I had married my hero. There I was, Joe’s young wife, who was supposed to be beautiful and healthy (or was that way when he chose to marry me). Now, my outward appearance was distorted and ugly, I had a tank full of my own mucus next to me, a tongue that was black, blue and double in size, no independence, smelled because I hadn’t showered in over a month and had pooped in my bed. I had hoped we would never have to experience some of these things together, at least not until we were much, much older. The love that I felt from Joe; so unconditional, so selfless, so protective and loyal had now intensified. I always knew he loved me, but he was able to show me just how much through this awful situation. The best part was there was no hesitation, it just came naturally. I couldn’t help but think about how his love reflected the love of Christ. Christ’s love didn’t depend on how beautiful or good we were, in fact, just the opposite. His love was more evident and powerful the weaker and more sinful we were. Joe was living out his belief in the sanctity of marriage, the seriousness of our vows and the true meaning of “in sickness and in health, until death do us part.” He did this without even trying and I knew that I would do the same for him in a heartbeat. This arduous time gave us the rare opportunity, as a young married couple, to share a closeness, physically (as he never left my side), emotionally (as we cried with each other) and spiritually (as we surrendered the control over to God) that we never had before.
